3 August, Day 4 of Gorge Trip

This is Saturday, 3 August, Day #4 of the trip along the Oregon Side of the Columbia River Gorge.

After breakfast at a local coffee shop, we were the first visitors of the day to the Columbia Gorge Discovery Center.  Exhibits ranged from the prehistoric to Lewis & Clark to early pioneers to a raptor lecture.

Who knew, Dire Wolves are real?!  (for the Games of Thrones fans).

Pioneers took wheels off wagons to float on rafts down the river

We visited a couple interesting buildings in the downtown area:
Old St. Peter’s Landmark, The Dalles, OR  built in 1897; saved from demolition and now owned and managed by a nonprofit, nondenominational organization.
Klindt’s Bookseller, oldest bookstore in Oregon

Then we were guided through the Fort Dalles Museum & Anderson Homestead.

By 4pm it was at least 90 degrees.  We were too hot so went back to the motel room to rest and cool off.  About 7pm we went out to dinner at a place on the river.  I did a sketch from our table as the scene’s colors changed with the advancing sunset.

All the photos from the day are here.
