Two days in Port Townsend

Meeting the Anacortes sketchers in Port Townsend on Monday morning was the motivation for this trip.  I left home on Monday, 30 June at 0730 and arrived exactly 2 hours later.  I had enough time for a bit of a drive around and then a sketch before they arrived on the 1045 ferry.

I did a sketch on the street of what is now the Public House restaurant and pub.

We met for lunch at a cafe with a second story patio overlooking the bay.  They sketched, I didn’t. After lunch we split up for more sketching and they left for the ferry mid-afternoon.  Here are four of the 6 or more who came over from Anacortes and Whidbey.

I stayed in town overnight so I did more sketching and a lot of wandering around making photos.  I checked out an historic hotel for a future visit.  I then sat in its shade to sketch this old fashioned light post.

Next I drove out to Fort Worden to sketch the Point Wilson lighthouse.  It was activated on 15 December 1879 but originally was atop the lightkeeper’s house.  It was moved to this position in 1913.  Since it is an active Coast Guard facility, no entry was allowed to the grounds.  I sketched it from outside the perimeter fence.

I ate dinner somewhat late, arriving at the restaurant at 1945. just a few minutes before they closed the kitchen.  I sketched the ferry dock from the patio with the sunset just beginning.

I went to the park for sunset.  I met a woman near my age tossing a Frisbee by herself.  We had a pick-up game of frisbee…. probably the first for me in 35 years!

There are lots of B&B’s in historic homes and I’ve stayed in them before. This time I went for simple and cheap!  But I still had a water view.  Dawn in Port Townsend, from my motel.

I went in search of breakfast and sketched in the cafe.

At 0930, it was already uncomfortably hot, sitting on my sketch stool in the sun.  But I got a sketch of the Haller Fountain, dedicated in 1906.  It is known as “Galatea” a Greek sea nymph.  This one is a re-cast in 1992 after the original was badly damaged.

The plumbing no longer works so it is dry.  However, there is a drinking fountain with 3 levels: for tall people, small people and dogs.
